Refugee Camps in Netherlands
All the Refugee Camps in The Netherlands are managed by a company known as the COA (Centraal Orgaan Opvang Asielzoekers). There are several different types of refugee centres in the Netherlands, where the refugee is placed, depends on what stage he/she is in the asylum procedure.

Koepelgevangenis, Haarlem - Netherlands
The Koepelgevangenis in Haarlem is a Refugee Camp that is located in a prison. As the country's crime rate has been declining for several years, couple of correctional facilities have closed. When the number of Migrants started to increase the Centraal Orgaan Opvang Asielzoekers (COA) found a solution to accommodate the high number of refugees in the prisons.
In my opinion this is a very economical solution to accommodate the high amount of refugees. The accommodation cuts down several different costs regarding other refugee camps for example setting up the refugee camp, providing proper electricity, sanitation and other different needs. |
Ter Apel, Groningen - Netherlands
The refugee camp of Ter Apel in Groningen is one of the largest and main refugee camps in the Netherlands. The refugee camp of Ter Apel makes part of the Refugee Complex Ter-Apelervenen. The refugee camp of Ter Apel consists of three different types of refugee camps Centrale Opvanglocatie, Procesopvanglocatie, Vrijheidsbeperkde Locatie. Since 2015 a POL-AMV has been placed in Ter Apel, A procesopvanglocatie for children who have traveled to the Netherlands alone.
The AZC Ter Apel doesn't only have three different types of Refugee Centre but it also has a office of the IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Services) where refugees are able to request asylum and an office of the DT&V (Repatriation and Departure Service). The AZC Ter Apel can accomodate a maximum of 2000 refugees. |
AZC Almere, Flevoland, Netherlands
The Refugee Camp in Almere is a relatively small refugee camp however it has a capacity of maximum 800 refugees. The camp was built in 2000 however it got rented out to several different companies. The small apartments consist of a ground and upper floor which are divided into several units. Each unit can accommodate approximately 6-8 refugees
Currently the Gemeente Almere is busy with extending their refugee camp and this way they will be able to boost up the capacity by 600 places. The target is to finish the construction by 2017. |
's-Gravendeel, Netherlands
The refugee camp in 's-Gravendeel is a emergency refugee centre (Nood Opvanglocatie). This has been opened on the 23rd November 2015 due to the fact that the flow of refugees was extremely high and therefore they needed more camps. This same location used to be home to another refugee camp however that shut down in 2013. As the property was still owned by the COA and most of the buildings were still standing they decided to re-open the location for a duration of two years |
